Your guide to branding basics

Hey friend!

If you're sometimes doubting what the branding lingo means, you're in the right place. I’ve put together a simple guide to branding basics, to help you understand these terms.

1. Branding

How to understand what branding is
Think of branding as the overarching narrative of your business. It's the sum total of how your brand is perceived in the minds of your customers, influenced by your communications, actions, and visuals. It's the story that ties everything together.

2. Brand identity
Brand identity is the collection of all elements that a company creates to portray the right image to its consumer. It's visuals, the tone of voice, type of content, and even customer service style.

3. Visual identity
This is the visual aspect of branding that includes the logo, color palette, typography, and other visual elements. It's like the face of your brand—the first thing people see.

4. Logo
The logo is the cornerstone of your visual identity, a symbol that represents your brand at the most basic level.

5. Submark
A simpler, smaller version of your logo used in specific contexts where the full logo isn’t practical.

6. Brand colors
These are the colors carefully chosen to represent your brand; they evoke emotions and connect with your audience on a psychological level.

7. Typography
This involves the fonts you choose to use across all your branding materials, which help in maintaining consistency and enhancing brand recognition.

8. Brand imagery
This includes any images, icons, or graphics used consistently in your branding materials that align with your brand's personality and message.

9. Brand voice
The distinctive tone and style of your written and spoken content. It’s how you communicate with your audience and express the personality of your brand.

10. Brand message
What you communicate through your marketing and promotional materials. It’s the core value proposition given to your audience.

11. Brand story
This is the narrative that weaves together the facts and emotions that your brand evokes. It includes the history, mission, and values that are foundational to your business.

12. Brand experience
Every interaction customers have with your brand, from navigating your website to the customer service they receive and the actual use of your product or service.

13. Brand strategy
Your plan for the development of a successful brand in order to achieve specific goals. It’s a long-term plan that involves the development of brand identity and how it's communicated to your target audience.

If you’re building your brand from the ground up or thinking about a rebrand, it’s important to consider all these elements. They work together to create a cohesive and compelling brand identity.
